WE ARE… Taking In The View

You like Sydney in the Summer? Love to get out and walk? Have a fondness for creativity? Crave the beauty of the sea? How about that need to satiate your cultural requirements for the month? I have the answer.

SCULPTURE BY THE SEA 2012.

This annual exhibition combines the majestic landscape of the beaches and cliffs of Sydney’s famous Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk as the exhibition space, and the artistic talents of some of the worlds best sculptors to create this internationally acclaimed art event which brings the art world to the public in the most spectacular fashion.

Curated by Australia’s best, both international and Australian artists are invited to create a piece for the exhibition. Running from 18 October – 4 November over 3 glorious weeks, it is free to the public and is open rain, hail or shine. No matter the weather, the pieces and the landscape provide stunning aspects wherever you turn.

Created in 1997 by David Handley, the event has expanded by leaps and bounds over the years with more artists, more sponsors and more public interest making Sculpture By The Sea 2012, the 16th year, one of the best years yet.

Explore the worlds biggest toy dump-truck, walk through a veritable forest of bamboo wind chimes, introduce your children to the art world by letting them loose on the interactive sculptures and spot those sneaky pieces hidden in plain sight.

If there is one thing I would recommend to ANYONE to do in Sydney this week, it’s Sculpture By The Sea 2012. Take the kids, bring a friend, chuck a sickie from work, wake up at a hideously early time to avoid the crowds, sleep in and embrace the crowds, remember that it’s Daylight Savings and go after work, or revel in the darkness and explore the pieces by dark. Just make it happen!!!

We Are… Bursting In Colour!

What do you get when you have 10,000 fun runners, triple that in colour bombs, and 5km to run free?? The Happiest 5km on the planet, that’s what!

After kicking off the fun early 2012 in the US, The Swisse Color Run quickly caught on to the fact that Australians are first in line to proudly wear a race number and run (read: stumble, frolic, krump, and/or Gangnam style it) for a good cause. The fact we get to throw colour bombs at each other and finally take part in our own skittles commercial is just a bonus.

Melbourne will initiate the fun bags this November 25th and Feb 10th 2013 will see Sydney behind a rainbow filter. Dates for Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Newcastle and Perth are yet to be announced. Swisse’s Celebrate Life Foundation hope to donate over $1 million over the next year through The Swisse Color Run, with funds raised in Sydney solely focused on Heart Kids Australia – supporting the families of children with Heart Disease.

Once making it to the finish line, the Finish Festival will keep you entertained with live music and mass final throw of colour! Oh and don’t worry, there will be a “clean up” area set up so your trip home is slightly less powdered.

Registration ($55 single, $50 as part of a team of 4+, Kids u/5 Free) includes the following goodies:

  • White Tee
  • White Sweatband (Yes!)
  • Race Bib #
  • 1x Colour Packet
  • 1x Color Run Temporary Tattoo

You can follow these colourful compadres on their site, Facey, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram (@theswissecolorrunaus)… But for the mo’, feast your eyes on this.

Now, to find the perfect goggles…

We Are… Needing a little retail therapy

I have this folder in my bookmarks called “Shit I want NOW”. It’s filled with awesome stuff that I seriously can not afford – mostly because I barely earn enough money to purchase my daily coffee, but also because I have varied and extensive desires for things that are classed as “champagne” to my “not-even-goon” budget.

Wistfully going through the pages in this folder I opened up one of my favourite leather-goods-with-a-twist brands and experienced that gut-wrenching feeling of hope quickly replaced by desolation and despair. Free shipping you say? Oh yes! In my budget? Hell no!

Vlieger & Vandam create seriously covetable leather goods, with the darker twist that I prefer in my fashion. Gorgeously structured totes, clutches, wallets and more in classic and functional designs with a serious twist; if you enjoy a little shock factor in your life then go directly to the website and enjoy free international shipping to celebrate the new website – just don’t expect a quick passage through airport security!

(Oh, and we definitely accept gifts here at We Are!)

We Are… Spinning Round And Round

Does anyone else have this faint memory of watching their parents play records when they were a kid? And I’m not talking about rockin’ out a disc-man, walkman, or even an 8-track.

I’m talking Vinyl people. The good stuff.

It’s time to take it back to the old school and by gosh Jimi Hendrix, am I excited!

This Saturday 6th October, hosts the Glebe Record Fair in Sydney.

From 9:00am – 4:00pm, PETER FORSYTH Auditorium (opposite Glebe Markets) will convert into a record junkie’s oasis, filled with dusty movers and shakers. There will be music from all genres, EPs, LPs, with a variety of CDs, music DVD’s, books, and other collectables filling up the stalls.

Now, be prepared to get your hands dirty because you never know what absolute gems you will stumble upon in those crates. If you’re a collector, you will be there bright and early because as always – first in, best dressed.

Earlybirds (9:00am – 10:00am) will sacrifice a healthy $6 for their vinyl addiction. Entry after 10:00am will see you fork out $3… Seriously, pocket change.

Follow these musical cats on their Facebook page for further details.

May your ears enjoy the fruits of your early wake up call!

We Are… In need of a long, stiff drink

Apologies for the absence but as usual, in Life Dishevelled style, that whole living business took over posting – BOO URNS!!!!

Never fear though, as I have an awesome track to make it all better!

Theo Parrish is a Detroit Tech/House/Deep House master – his music makes you practically taste that poolside cocktail that you know you should be imbibing for the perfect summer’s eve. He collaborated with the gorgeously scratchy vocals and talents of Ghanaian Londoner Andrew Ashong and the outcome is a beautifully dreamy track that I could easily listen to for weeks on end.
